Using the "Distress Tolerance" Skill
Radical Acceptance
You have 4 options for painful problems/situations:
1. Solve the problem
2. Change how you feel
3. Accept it
4. Stay miserable
What is your really serious problems, pains, traumas?
Well, now you have 2 options:
1. Accept that it's there or happened
2. You can sit there and be miserable about it forever
Honestly, what good can come out of the 2nd option??
NONE
You'll end up destroying yourself eventually.
To radically accept something you must first fully understand what "radical" means:
....Complete and total; accept something from deep in your soul; accept it fully in your mind, heart and body; all encompassing...
Basically, you aren't fighting against the obstacle. It's realizing in a way, that this is now the path or that this is how life is going to be from now on. Accepting it helps you look to ways you can make things better or tolerable during this path or journey you are now on. Plus, you never know if this is just a small bend in the road or a permanent way until you get through it.
Example: You are in a bad accident and have to lose on or both of your legs. Yes, it's painful, traumatic and a life changer forever. However, you can radically accept that it happened and move on. When you move on, you can then see that there are prosthetics to help you learn to walk again, you can still participate in various activities and sports just with a little bit of modification. Heck, there are olympic sports for individuals like you! You can make a difference in someone's life by fighting through the hard times and accepting it all. You can become a famous speaker, business owner, athlete. All of this....is possible by radically accepting that this happened but it doesn't have to be the end of life as you know it.
