Using the "Distress Tolerance" Skill
Turning Your Mind
Radical acceptance is not just a one time shot. It's a constant lifestyle by repetition. A great way to get going is by turning your mind.
It's all about accepting things instead of always rejecting them. Not every path is a straight one, they will and do have turns and forks. It's your choice to accept the one path and walk it or see it through. Even if it hurts or is painful. We need to see things through in life to get where we want to eventually.
How can you tell that you are not accepting of your current path? If you feel bitter, angry, annoyed, sever depression, etc... that's rejecting. Notice your feelings! Even the mask we try to wear to hide our true feelings is a way of rejecting.
Personal example: The last week or so, I've been putting on a smile for everyone else, even when on the inside I am depressed and down. Feeling of the "why me" scenario and complete despair. As of last night, I turned my mind to accept that this is the cards I am dealt proverbially and I need to see this through. I need to stop hiding behind my pain and suffering. It's just making me physically ill and pulling me from my family and friends. All of which is not good.
When you realize all of this, make a mental note and dedication to accepting the path or situation. You don't have to physically, emotionally or mentally accept it right now. Then, just keep doing it over and over again.
So, what do you do?
1. First notice
2. Make an inner commitment or dedication to accept it eventually
3. Do it again
A key to this is trying to remember that your pain is not catastrophic or constant. This too shall pass and you will move on.
